Our shining star: Sandra’s fundraising challenge

On the 10th June, Shine’s cleaning wonder Sandra is going to be undertaking an incredible personal challenge, to help local charity the Ocean Stars Trust build a new dormitory in a Sri Lankan orphanage.

The Ocean Stars Trust is dedicated to helping children in Sri Lanka through education and social enrichment, raising funds to go towards buildings, teachers, uniforms, play equipment and teacher training. This is all to help ensure young Sri Lankan children are able to enjoy equal opportunities, as well as inspire meaningful friendship, hope and joy. The charity was established in 2005 following the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004, and each year a team of dedicated volunteers travel out to Sri Lanka to help support small isolated communities, where there is little government aid.

This Friday, Sandra is going to be cycling 22 miles, walking/running 3.5 miles, and then swimming 1.2 miles – not just once, but twice. What’s more, she’s also going to be doing it on her 25-year-old bike (with only five gears!) – and it’s all to help build a new dormitory in a children’s orphanage in Kilinochchi. The orphanage has recently had a big intake of new children, and is subsequently in real need of more space and more beds, so the children can be as comfortable as possible in their new surroundings.

If you might like to support Sandra in her incredible personal challenge (complete with her 25-year-old bike!), please take a look at her JustGiving page, where any donations would be gratefully received. As well as her upcoming fundraising, Sandra is also going to work in Sri Lanka with the Ocean Stars Trust for a second time this October, so this really is a cause that lies close to her heart. Everyone in the Shine studio can’t wait to hear how she gets on (especially as some of us are tired from just a walk to the local bakers) – Sam’s even donated a stunning David Fielden wedding dress to the cause, just to add a couture twist!
